An Online College Degree Can Help You Earn More Money

If you’re an older adult who’s always wanted to continue your education and you just haven’t had time to, or if you want to go back to school for that advanced masters degree but a full-time job keeps you from signing up for classes, you’re in luck. Today, online universities afford nontraditional students, parents, those with full-time jobs, and others not able to go back to college full time in a traditional university setting the opportunity to continue their educations on their own schedules.

It used to be that if you wanted to go back to college, you had to go to class part-time, at night, or otherwise arrange your schedule inconveniently, so that you could be at classes on campus. Alternatively, of course, you could quit your job if you had the means to do so and go back to school full time. However, today, you can keep your full-time career and your regular schedule intact and still get that degree you want. Got kids you need to be home for? No problem. An online colleges let you attend classes on your own schedule, be home for your kids and anything else you need to be there for — and oftentimes, you won’t have to step foot outside your front door to do so until the latter part of your training, at least. It’s likely that you’ll need some hands-on fieldwork study eventually outside your home, but you can get the early parts of your associates degree done completely at home and on your own schedule.

One of the first things you need to do is to look for a community college that is fully accredited. For this, check the school and make sure it has accreditation from the Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education; the Distance Education and Training Council is the accrediting organization for these types of universities, also called “distance learning” institutions. You can also ask the class itself for references and find other students who have attended a particular distance-learning program, to make sure that it provides the quality schooling you want. Of course, you’ll also want to check your field of study and find a distance-learning school that specializes in that.

Another consideration for many students is financial assistance. Previously, students attending distance-learning programs were not offered financial aid unless at least 50% of their schooling was completed on a physical campus. This is no longer true, which is perhaps as a result of both the improvement of distance learning schooling training and the recognition that this type of learning is, some say, the next big trend. Today, it is often considered a indulgence to be able to go to school full time as a student, and these types of programs recognize that no longer can many people simply drop their lives and go to school full time. Many students these days are nontraditional students with other responsibilities beyond their own lives, so that they do not have the luxury to devote three or four years’ time exclusively to an education.

Perhaps the top place to help you determine your potential school’s accreditation is to look at the regional accreditation board in your school’s area. If your school is accredited by this board, it will be fully accepted by employers and other professional organizations as a bona fide school. This, in turn, makes it much easier to get a postition and recognition. In fact, many organizations and employers will not recognize a masters degree unless it is from an accredited postgraduate school. However, if you take the time to make sure your community college is accredited, your online schooling is every bit as valid as one you would obtain on campus.

Do Potential Employers Value Distance Learning Degrees?

With the ability to keep working, take care of a family, and receive a quality education without relocating, distance learning degrees have continued to increase in popularity. Unfortunately, the Internet also provides a venue for bogus diploma mills sprouting up to make money on the sale of fake degrees. In a report published in 2003, USA Today says 400 such businesses are currently in operation, and the numbers are increasing as these dubious businesses continue to make approximately $500 million annually.

However, despite all the unpleasant information going around about distance learning degrees, the fact is there are plenty of legitimate universities and colleges offering online degree programs. These colleges are legitimate and not involved in any way in offering dubious and fake diplomas. Instead, these colleges are going the extra mile to provide quality education online by taking advantage of all available instructional resources such as quality instructional design coupled with video lectures, online digital libraries and proctored exams to ensure their students get quality education and a valid, qualified diploma. Unfortunately, numerous employers have not yet been sold into this alternative way of acquiring education, thus they still regard such degrees as invalid or dubious.

In an effort to change the negative perception, the U.S. National Education Board has established 6 accreditation agencies to evaluate and provide accreditation to the higher learning institutions meeting the minimum criteria for a quality education, thus differentiating between the bogus degree programs. For example, the Distance education and training council provides accreditation for those institutes solely dedicated to online degree programs. The agency is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Other distinguished specialized accreditation agencies exists that are designed to accredit specific course programs. Programs that meet the set standards of excellence are given accreditation by these specialized accredit ting agencies based on area of specialization. A good example of such an accrediting agency is International Association for Management Education (AACSB) which accredits accounting related programs. Also American Health Information Management Association is tasked with accrediting health programs in different colleges. It is worthy to note that all these accreditation agencies have to be recognized by CHEA for them to be considered as legit agencies.

So, to verify the educational quality of any institution, students, parents, and potential employers should be concerned about accreditation status. If any college or university has that coveted seal of approval, it means distance learning degrees have met the same basic standards of excellence with the support and facilities necessary to adequately offer online degree programs. Conversely, specialized accreditation concentrates on evaluating the course curriculum based upon the established standards of the university or college.

Accreditation ensures students have received quality and adequate training in their perspective areas of study and definitely earned their distance learning degrees. Parents and potential employers can believe these students are prepared to become a productive member of society. By the same token, employees who have taken accredited courses have met the requirements of their specialize area of study. Alternatively, it also mean that institutions denied accreditation have not met the minimum standards of excellence.

In the end, it is totally up to potential employers to decide whether to hire an individual with a distance learning degree. With skepticism influenced by all the bogus diploma mills, no wonder they are being more cautious. Therefore, if the accreditation is supplied by a trusted and recognized source, the application for a job is less likely to be set aside. Instead, it has a better chance to be found in the stack for a second interview or final selection for a job position.

The Best College Football Teams to Start the Season

8. Ole Miss Rebels. I see this team starting out at #8, and Jevon Snead should be a driving force in 2009. He also has Tim Tebow figured out, so anything can happen in a game against the Gators. Don’t sleep on the Rebels.

7. Virginia Tech. Things were looking great for Virginia Tech before losing their running back for the entire year. Coming off a disappointing season last year (9-4), the ACC is weaker this year than last. I can’t see this team finishing at the #7 spot and they have a tough road ahead of them.

6. Ohio State. I could see Ohio State back in the national title game, assuming the team wins the games it’s supposed to. Terrell Pryor will do some great things for this team, and if they don’t make the BCS championship, a Rose Bowl is in the cards.

5. Alabama. Yet another team that could easily compete for the BCS championship. Alabama should coast through most of the season, save for its match-ups against LSU, the Vols, and the Rebels. While an undefeated season is unlikely, the team’s finish shouldn’t be too far off.

4. USC. A very young team, but possibly the most talented one in football. The inexperience makes it difficult to believe they’ll go all the way, but an early match-up against Ohio State will set the tone for the season. I expect good things either way.

3. Oklahoma. Some of the best wide outs in college football, the returning Heisman champ at quarterback, and a polished team all around makes Oklahoma a sure contender for the BCS championship. The team’s biggest hurdle is fellow division mate, Texas.

2. Big 12’s – Texas. Texas Longhorns are the other big favorite to represent the Big 12 in the title game. They have essentially the same schedule as Oklahoma and are returning most of their starters on offense, including standout QB Colt McCoy,and defense. Week 6 against Oklahoma will determine which bowl game they will reserve in January, the Orangeor BCS title game. Likely to lose one game in an upset.

1. SEC’s – Florida. Florida Gators are the favorite to win the BCS titlefor many reasons. 1. They are returning 11 starters on defense and all 11 backups. 2. They are returning 9 of 11 starters on offense with the exception of Harvin and Nelson, both lost via NFL. 3. They will start in the number 1 position and have a relatively weaker schedule than last season. As long as they remain undefeated, they will play the Big 12 winner or USC. 4. They have Tim Tebow. 5. They avoid Alabama and Ole Miss until the SEC title game in Atlanta. Their toughest games of the season will be going to LSU and punching Lane Kiffin and Tennesseein the mouth for his rude allegations. They will walk to the national title game after week 5.

How To Learn Using Mind Mapping

What is Mind Mapping

Mind Mapping is the representation of ideas and information in a visual form which the mind finds easier to visualise and remember. Images are located throughout the Mind Map with a larger central image or theme located at the centre of the Mind Map. Topics and subtopics are arranged around that central image.

Mind Maps are considered one of the most effective note taking strategies and a number of different mind mapping software tools exist to facilitate the creation of mind maps.

The benefits of Mind Maps

Mind Maps provide a quick and easy method of organizing and highlighting the information that matters. This is particularly useful when you are studying for an exam as normal notes can be time consuming and even a barrier to revision. They are also useful for improving creativity, generating new ideas and decision making.

When reviewing information for an exam being able to review your notes quickly is important. Reviewing the most important, relevant information is even more important and Mind Maps enable you to do this as the most important key topics are located nearer the centre. Mind Maps also make use of images which the mind finds easier to remember and these can be used to summarize important information. Also the mind is better able to recall the information when associations or connections are made between related information. Mind Maps make this much easier then normal linear note taking.

Revising for exams using Mind Maps

It will be easier to recall information if you can build upon the knowledge you have already gained. Therefore create a Mind Map of what you already know of the subject or topic. When you build upon that knowledge you will be able to connect and associate new information with your existing knowledge.

Obtain a large sheet of paper or if you are using Mind Mapping Software create a central image or theme at the centre of the page. This will represent the main topic. Then write down the main subtopics related to that central topic by creating branches moving out from the central keyword. Add sub- branches to these subtopics containing keywords or short phrases summarizing key ideas that you can recall from memory and try to see how the different sub-topics and elements are associated.

With linear note taking you write in sentences which are monotonous and boring. Also the key information does not stand out and revising for exams using normal linear notes can actually be more of a hindrance then a help. With Mind Maps the key information is nearer the centre and summed up in a few keywords. If you can sum up key information with one keyword or an image this is even better. Dont forget to use plenty of colour and images to make key topics stand out with larger writing and images nearer the centre. This can help you to visually organize the main topics from the sub-topics and make the most important information stand out.

After you have recalled as much information as possible obtain the books that are most important for revision purposes. Flick through these books viewing the main chapter headings. Also take a look at the contents pages. Now speed read these books focusing in on the most important information and try and build upon what you already know. There is a common myth that speed reading significantly reduces comprehension and retention of information. Speed reading can actually increase retention of information as it enables you to gain a broader perspective of a subject or topic important for memory and can also help your mind piece together the information particularly when you come to read the information in more depth.

Now prioritise those books that provide the most valuable information when studying or revising and read them in greater depth.

Add more branches to your Mind Map and continue to add the key information after reading each section of the book. These keywords, images and phrases should sum up the main topics and subtopics.

Continually recalling the information you have just read will go along way by itself in helping you store the information in your long term memory. It will enable you to determine if your mind is effectively recalling the information and if not to adjust your memorization methods.

Don’t forget to keep adding to your Mind Map after gaining knowledge that you consider important for the exam. Your Mind Map should become larger over time and more branches should be created moving even further from the central topic. Your Mind Map should become more detailed so make sure you use a large sheet of paper. If your using Mind Mapping Software you should add notes providing more in depth information if needed. Keep reviewing your Mind Map every few days to reinforce the information you have learned.

As you approach the exam you should be able to recall in detail the knowledge gained by glancing at your detailed Mind Map which should now contain a detailed summary of your entire subject or topic.

As already stated the Mind works best with the use of Images and by creating associations between related information. Also the most important information will stand out and you will not have to read through tons of notes to find the key information. The Mind Map will also have assisted your ability to remember by helping you to recall and review this information.

The mind can recall information much easier when it can visualise a subject from a broader perspective, can visualise how the different topics and sub-topics are ordered and connected. If you combine this with the power of images which give the mind more mental hooks to latch onto you have the most effective method for learning and recall.

College Grants And How To Make Use Of Them

College students are famous for being the most poor of all social classes- but they get by nevertheless. Helping them do so is the government, who passes along grants their way to help finance their classes, living quarters, books, and food. Keep in mind that it will take work to get such grants, as they will certainly not come to you by themselves.

Before applying for anything, the first thing to be done is to talk to a college or high school counselor about one’s options. Not just with government grants, but also with local scholarships. In most cases, a government grant won’t pay the full cost of college, so this step is vital and shouldn’t be skipped. The student should know several things such as their own income, savings, income of their parents, GPA, ACT or SAT scores, and may even be prepared to write a persuasive essay.

Students who have parents that make too much money decide that filling out a grant application is a waste of time. This could not be further from the truth, however, since the majority of all students are able to get at least some money from the government in assistance. While grants such as the Pell grant may be variable as according to one’s income, all students should expect to receive at least something from a Pell grant regardless of their situation.

The majority of grant opportunities are going to come from filling out a FAFSA. This application is required by some institutions before even gaining entry into college, so it’s necessary no matter what the financial need is of the student. It usually takes an hour or two to fill out, and is best filled out after filing taxes.

The university in which a student applies for will also be able to help when it comes to financial aid, such as the case in a work study. While doing a government-approved work study, the university employs a student in exchange for a drastic cut in the tuition of the student. This way the university gets free help, and also helps out students in the area who aren’t afraid to work for their education.

When presented with a government loan, make certain that after your adventure in college that you can secure a job or have money saved up to start paying on loans. Government loans are usually low interest, so they aren’t so bad in terms of paying off, and they also don’t start until school is over. Afterwards, however, they are just like a normal bill and will require periodic payment.

Closing Comments

From here, students should now go talk to their counselors, fill out a FAFSA, and fill out as many scholarships as possible. Every little bit helps in paying off an expensive education.

I Got Into Harvard With A B+. Learn How I Did It!

Many students have problems with a low grade point average(GPA). It seems like you just zip through middle school without a hitch, then high school throws you for a loop.

New teachers combined with tough classes hit you hard, and all of a sudden you see B’s and even C’s on your report card.

When I was applying for Ivy League schools, I had to cope with the fact that I had a low GPA. I understand exactly what you are going through, and in this article, I would like to share some of my coping techniques.

Click here to learn AP test taking tips!

These three things helped me:

1. Take some college classes and do your very best in them.

During the summer, instead of goofing off, sign up for a few college classes in courses that you are really interested in. Your interest will help you do well. If you can also arrange it so that your classes fill in a blank in your “larger story”, it is really helpful. As an example, you would take a course in Renaissance Philosophy if you were interested in medieval history.

Clearly, seeing that you are actually capable of doing college level work and doing it well will look good on your application. This is a demonstration of your academic depth.

Your high school GPA is intended to convey your potential for being able to handle college level work. If you can simply demonstrate that you not only can, but have, successfully handled college level work, that looks even better to the admissions committee.

2. During your final semester or two, be sure to take as many AP and Honors courses as possible.

It goes without saying, you will need to do very well in your courses. You want your college transcript to give an accurate record of your school attendance, work ethic, and study skills.

During the fall semester of Common Applications, I took seven AP classes. It was a really hard semester. However, those seven AP classes really looked good on my transcript! It didn’t matter that the grades did not show yet. The important thing was that my effort showed my serious academic intent.

We talk a lot about trends in our admissions committees discussions.

What I mean by this is that taking these AP courses shows that the student has potential and is actively working on improving himself. So, even if your grades are not terrific, you can show that you have what it takes to improve them in a consistent manner over a period of time. It’s a lot better to have lower grades as a freshman and show that you have improved them as a junior than the other way around. Remember that.

3. Make much of your summer activities and your extracurricular accomplishment.

Obviously, you want to draw attention away from your GPA if it is low. You can do this effectively by giving a generous estimate of the amount of time you have spent on your extracurricular activities and talking about them in great detail in your essays.

Doing this will make it clear that the reason your GPA is low is that you were really busy with your varsity teams and clubs.

One thing you should be aware of is that, participation in clubs and varsity teams is essential for admittance to Harvard. Your grades alone will not gain entrance for you no matter how good they are.

How to Have a Great College Experience

If you are a college student, good grades should be your top priority. But, college is about much more than success in the classroom. Here are a few suggestions that can help all college students.

Although you should study hard enough to get good grades, that shouldn’t be your only focus on campus. In fact, being a total bookworm is not recommended, as you will not develop the appropriate social skills for a successful career if you are constantly isolated. You need a good balance of studying, health and social life in order to have total college success. You should still take some time to do sports or exercise. Like study habits, it’s best to develop good fitness habits now because it will be darn hard later in life. If you don’t believe me, just take a good look outside or in a shopping mall to see your average American physique.

If you want to keep having a healthy body for many years to come, you have to stay physically active. It doesn’t matter whether you exercise through sports on campus, outside clubs/leagues, with your friends or even on your own. Just be active. Find activities that you will enjoy. If you don’t know what you like, try different things out. You can play tennis, try team sports like basketball, workout at one of the campus gyms, snowboard, do martial arts or even dance. The options are endless on college campuses.

A big advantage of living on a college campus is the easy availability of modern exercise and athletic equipment. Don’t forget that diet is a big part of good health. Limit your junk food but get the nutritional fuel you need to support an active lifestyle .

Reserve time for fun and social interation. Social skills will prove very important to you during college and in the future. Of course, you want to be sure not to overdo the partying.

Be sure that all of your activities are legal. Most colleges have strict rules against drugs and underage drinking. It would be a shame to have your graduate school or career options reduced because of an arrest record.

If you have time, consider part-time work during the school year and be sure to work during the summers, in your related fields if possible. Besides making some of your own extra spending money, you will learn to deal with different people. You can only develop these people skills outside the classroom. Often a well-rounded B+ average individual with good people skills will achieve more than the A+ student lacking in social skills. Professional success will depend on a combination of intelligence and people skills, not intelligence alone.

College students today will come into contact with students from all cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. If you are smart, you will take the opportunity to develop a diverse circle of friends. Not only will they help you grow as a person, but associating with and learning about them will prepare you for the people with whom you will work in our increasingly diverse, global society.

Take advantage of cultural events on campus, especially guest speakers. They are often entertaining, and they have things to teach you that you won’t get in a classroom. Best of all, they won’t make you take notes or pass an exam on their lectures.

My hope is that you, and all college students, will realize how much you can get out of college, and actively take as much away with you as possible.
