Music as a Tool for Growth and Awareness

Music has always been an influence that has brought us great pleasure and a feeling of happiness.  Whether it is the beating of a shaman drum to stimulate awareness in a trance-like way, or the background music in the elevator to calm and soothe us, we know that music affects our mood.    Music is a tool for growth and awareness.

Does music affect us on other levels?  Music is, after all, a series of tones or energy vibrations collected together.  Our thoughts are energy, as well as our memories.  Can we use music for healing?  Most definitely, we use it all the time!  Music gives us emotional charge and release.  We can use music to motivate and give us more energy.

Music helps develop our fine motor skills, such as through using small muscle groups to play a piano, and our gross motor skills by using our large muscle groups through dance and movement. Music also improves vocal, speaking and listening skills, as well as focus.
Rhythm and pitch are part of our growth and development.  It begins with the sound of our mother’s heartbeat as we develop in the womb.  We sing lullabies to lull our children to sleep, having a calming and almost hypnotic effect. We teach our chidren their ABC’s easily by learning the ABC song, and integrate the information into our memory seamlessly and quickly.
Does it matter what style of music we use for a given task?  Most definitely!  Our contemporary rock and rap music actually decreases our ability to learn, while Baroque music aids in concentration, focus, and memory.  This effect is brought about through the beats per minute, approximately 60 beats per minute.  Music can be used as a Tool for Growth and Awareness.  Learning how to use music to stimulate, calm, learn, or change your mood can enhance your life and bring greater happiness.
